Dynamics
of Change
Everywhere we
look, large scale change continues to occur
– from multinational mergers to high tech
start ups, from less government intervention
to private/public sector partnerships - the
way we do business and the environments in
which it takes place has changed.
Organizational change has become a permanent
state of affairs - it is the way we do
business! The nature of business processes,
the markets in which organizations are
operating, the structures used and the
numbers and types of people who deliver the
business and contribute to the business
strategy are in a constant state of flux.
In order for
individuals to successfully manage change,
they must understand their own reactions to
change and develop practical techniques to
constructively deal with the personal
impacts of change. When an organization
makes a change, large or small, simple or
complex, it requires a change from the
individual based on skills, behaviours and
abilities. Individuals who examine the
“ways in which they work” and ultimately how
they can continue to play a valuable and
meaningful role in the organization will be
able to deliver on individual, team and unit
performance.
Our response to
change is often shaped by our understanding
of what the organization expects and
demonstrates about the change. Change is
also impacted by individual feelings about
self and work. Only individuals can take
responsibility for behaviour change. Most
of us adapt our behaviours when we can
relate the change to concrete and specific
consequences, both positive and negative.
